Palm Sunday at St. Paul’s
Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Jesus entering Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. The event, in itself, is not earth shattering. Only when we consider that Daniel prophesied (about 600 B.C.) this event to the very day do we gain a glimpse of the historical importance. Zechariah also prophesied (470 B.C.) that “your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey.” For more than five hundred years the crowds were looking for their Messiah. They responded to Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem by shouting “Hosanna” (meaning “save now”) and throwing cloaks on the ground and waving palm branches. This was a sign of submission and recognition of Jesus as their Messiah. The crowd, however, missed the fact that Jesus had also come as their Savior to deliver them from their sins. Thinking that salvation from Rome was their biggest problem, they missed seeing Jesus as their God and the One who would solve the problem of sin, life and death. They were looking for fulfillment of their own desires. Who is Jesus for you; the God of your desires or the God who can save you from your sin?
One of the most beautiful church services of the year unfolds next Thursday when we remember Jesus’ last supper with his disciples and ponder Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The Maundy Thursday service begins at 7:00 p.m. on April 2nd. Scripture, music, communion, and a brief hand washing ceremony will be woven together to unfold the events that changed the course of history. Please join us for this moving worship service.
